We dropped into Chinchon for breakfast - a medieval town on the Castile plateau, about an hour out of Madrid, on our route to Toledo.
The Fábrica de Pan bakery in the Plaza Mayor was open for business with a fresh batch of 'Bastones de la Suerte' cooling above the counter. Translated as 'Lucky Walking Sticks', we were urged to buy one before getting our weekly lotto ticket.
Needless to say, we declined, but not before buying a bag of aniseed & lemon biscuits and some aniseed & lemon brioche. Chinchon is renowned for it's distilled aniseed spirit - and occasionally you'll find it liberally added to our homemade cakes and desserts too 😋

La Mallorquina is a Madrid institution. Founded in 1884 they have been making 'Torrijas' (think French toast on steroids) for generations (among other sweets treats).
The queue this morning to buy Torrijas was out of the front door -as usual- but we stood in line to get our pink bag. Others jostled at the counter for a space to eat one with coffee.
Expect to see our version of Torrijas on the specials board soon 😋

We're back in our spiritual home of Madrid for a few days, seeking out new bars and old, catching up with old friends. And -coincidentally- a nice reminder of why we're called "Strawberry Tree"...
This is the statue of the eponymous Bear and Strawberry Tree in the Puerta del Sol. It represents the resolution of a dispute in 1222 between the then medieval city council and the church, and the bear and the tree have appeared on the city's coat of arms ever since.
The tree itself has been an important part of Iberian life for centuries, partly because it is so versatile, with every part of the plant used for something different. In fact, the city's streets are still lined with these trees today and it's why we chose to name our project after it.
Our cookery classes are incredibly popular, offering a unique mix of hands-on fun, social history and stories from Spain. Lunch comes from the dishes you cook during the morning with plenty left to take home. #cookeryclasses
