Yesterday we took time out from our "busy schedule" to visit the 9th Mogán Avocado Festival! Who knew such a thing existed? Needless to say, we have never seen so many varieties and such enormous avos... And they tasted pretty good too 😋

Today we spent the morning in the cavernous Atarazanas market, sampling some amazing produce, marvelling at the abundant seafood, beautiful wild fungi, and so much more. It has been such a pleasure spending time with the team outside of work. Tomorrow we go our separate ways. Some to Granada, some to the UK, some to Michelin-starred kitchens up the coast... but all taking great memories with us of our time together here.

Day 3 in Málaga with our amazing team. Learning the difference between churros and porras; discovering the province's sweet wines at the heaving 'Antigua Casa de Guardia' bar; and dining at the Málaga institution that is El Pimpi, among the many highlights of the day.

We were recently introduced to Alasdair from @theoldways.farm near Bridport - and what an introduction! We love our eggs at Strawberry Tree - we make fresh mayonnaise every day, as well as using eggs in our tapas, cakes and, of course, for breadcrumbing our croquetas and crispy aubergines every day. We use about 150 eggs every week. At The Old Ways Farm, just down the road from us in Symondsbury, Alasdair practices regenerative farming, using high-welfare systems that mimic nature and improve biodiversity and soil health. The ‘hottest’ ticket for January in Lyme… On Friday 2nd Feb, @highgrangedevon is teaming up with us for a special Spanish feast – and things are going to get flamin’ hot! @highgrangedevon will be slow cooking smoked pork shoulder for 18 hours and bringing it to Lyme Regis where they will set up their grills in the Strawberry Tree garden for an indoor feast. There will also be a sort of Spanish Burns night - a ‘queimada’ - where a Galician flaming punch will be lit and special incantations read to give it special powers and ward off bad spirits. We have an amazing opportunity for someone to join our kitchen team.   We are looking for a key new kitchen team member to work closely with Giselle, a passionate chef with 40 years’ experience. Your tasks will include food preparation, ordering from suppliers, supporting tasks during lunch and/or evening service, as well as all those smaller jobs that make a successful, commercial kitchen run smoothly. You will learn first-hand about our food from Giselle and have a unique opportunity to develop your knowledge of and experience cooking Spanish and North African cuisine. Catering experience is useful but not essential for the role as training will be provided. What we do need is someone with bags of initiative, a desire to learn, good attention to detail, capable of working alone on set tasks but also as a key member of the team. The role would equally suit a young person, or someone with life experience. Natural curiosity and a passion for food is obligatory! Working days / hours: Generally Weds to Sat, 10am to 3.30pm, and Sat evenings. Between 25-40 hours per week -but we can be flexible for the right candidate. This is a part-time, permanent position. Crossing continents... As we wave goodbye to North Africa, so the unmistakable silhouette of the 'Rock' looms into view. Gibraltar - the 'End of Europe' - is Giselle's family home and a true melting pot of cultures, food, religions. In many ways it is the spiritual home of Strawberry Tree too.

This morning we wandered the old medina in Tangier to buy some Ras el hanout for the restaurant from a merchant called Youssef 👳‍♀️. He paced his stall, basket in hand, carefully picking out handfuls of spices to blend. The mix differs from stall to stall, but his included five types of peppercorn, rose petals, dried saffron and galangal, aniseed, turmeric, mace... more than 22 in total, freshly ground to order. Can't wait to get our mix back to our kitchen...

Today we drove over to Tetouan and through the mountains up to the 'blue city' of Chefchaouen - famous for its blue colour and after 1471, home to the Moors fleeing Andalusia and Granada - very much tied with Giselle's heritage. Lunch included a beautiful chicken pastilla, candied carrots and stewed pumpkin with cinnamon. Inspiration all round 😋

Today we had an Arabian adventure. We met so many interesting people - shopkeepers, artists, restaurant owners, hoteliers... in the alleyways, back rooms and establishments of the ancient Medina. Like an episode out of Mr Benn 👳‍♀️🧕. Thank you 'Uncle Henry' & Priscilla for the best tagine and your beautiful company. ❤

Final day in Madrid before the team heads off on their separate journeys - and what a way to end our trip. A visit to the beautiful former house of the Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla filled with his oil paintings; a little break for coffee and tortilla; then lunch and shopping.
